YOU,
rough slapped by anger,
thumbed your nose at their rules,
climbed playground trapezes
swinging high in the sky,
a wild child, certain,
trusting your body,
immortal, fantastic
as you gripped by your knees.
ME,
a Capricorn doubter,
earthbound, angst-bound,
a mind choked with "what if's",
stop-starts of grieving,
the bleaching, leaching,
as I plodded along,
unsmiling outsider
in a tight, darkening world.
YOU,
the girl child
quivering with wonder,
waltzing on ice rinks,
skate blades a'flashing,
slicing the hard stuff,
elegant, dangerous.
Reckless in choices
you were conjuring futures,
leaping and gliding
through green light first years.
ME,
circled and circling,
trapped in a mind-sludge,
hating your vanity,
its vaulting assurance,
the vexing bright courage,
while my days dragged, drained me,
harnessed to bitterness,
with amber lights blinking
the stop signs to come.
Ask, who was I?
Who was she ?
The distance between us,
the ripe contradictions,
trawling for meaning
as decades slip by.
It's the push-pull
of Identity,
part painful, part precious,
nudging eternity
as Currumbin breezes call.
